Australia’s Leading Continence Support for Autistic Individuals and People with Disability

Meet Monica Reeves
Meet Monica Reeves (B. Nurs, GradCert Autism) our Clinical Nurse Consultant specialising in autism and continence support. Through Bright Lives she leads the team in providing specialist NDIS continence assessments and clinical guidance via telehealth across Australia.
When Continence Challenges Affect Sleep, Confidence and Daily Life

Continence challenges can affect many areas of life for autistic individuals and people with disability. Difficulties with bladder and bowel control may impact sleep, school participation, personal dignity and family wellbeing. Many families and support coordinators struggle to find clinicians who understand the complex relationship between continence, neurodiversity, sensory differences and communication needs.
Bright Lives provides specialised continence support designed specifically for neurodivergent individuals and people with disability. This often starts with a Brightlives Continence Assessment.
Night-time wetting and continence challenges can significantly affect sleep quality for both the individual and their family. Ongoing sleep disruption often leads to fatigue, stress and reduced wellbeing, making effective continence support an important part of restoring healthy sleep routines.
Many neurodivergent individuals experience differences in interoception, which affects the ability to recognise bladder or bowel signals. These differences can make it difficult to identify when the body needs to use the toilet, leading to accidents or delayed toileting.
Difficulties with routines, communication, sensory environments or anxiety can make toileting stressful or overwhelming. These challenges often require specialised continence strategies that consider the individual’s neurological, sensory and developmental needs.

These can be in addition to a Brightlives continence assessment, or as a substitute to a continence assessment.
